Synopsis
In Journalism and Media Studies 430, I have learned how to create multimedia websites and use applications such as Adobe Express, Adobe Premiere Pro and Canva to enhance my stories. This semester taught me digital journalism techniques, ethics and tips to increase audience engagement. I will apply these lessons to my future career in journalism by developing portfolios and sharing content through digital spaces and platforms.
Developing the Story
Journalistic and ethical guidelines I followed when I was working on the story included giving credit to sources through attribution, listening to audiences including fans of the musicians in my story and using truth and accuracy to share demographics of the music scene. The challenges I faced included not getting responses from certain musicians and fans, technical difficulties with uploading videos and having blurry or grainy pictures. The opportunities involved meeting new people, discovering musicians and using more digital media tools like social media, Adobe software and blogs to enhance my project.
Digital Media Experience
This experience has helped me have a better understanding of digital journalism by allowing me the opportunities to see the process of developing content online. I have used data, databases and Microsoft Excel for digital journalism by using graphs and tables for statistics, demographics and other data points to reflect information I have learned throughout the course. Learning digital media, mobile media tools and languages including WordPress, HTML and CSS helped me advance my knowledge on formatting websites, infographics and design layouts for my project.
My experiences in learning social storytelling tools like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn helped me learn that I can apply these tools to my journalism career in the digital world and use these storytelling spaces to network with other students, storytellers and groups geared toward certain niches. Some of the most enjoyable moments in working on the website and my journalist story included taking pictures, capturing and editing videos, having interviews and adding all these multimedia elements to my site because I liked learning more about website and content creation through digital media experiences.
